Word Definition
Actis coating After a bottle has been manufactured, the bottle is then coated with a passive barrier of Carbon, which is chemically bonded to the internal walls. Bi-axial orientation Process of stretching the plastic molecules both vertically and horizontally adding structural stability. Bulk box Bottles are packed into full size plastic lined cartons.
Bulk pallet Bottles are packed on a 40"x48" or 44"x56" pallet. Each layer is separated by a corrugated layer separator.
Bulk tray Bottles are packed onto a pallet, each layer contains a tray on the bottom.
Bulk tumble Bottles are packed into bulk boxes. There is no order they are inserted as they come off the line.
cc cubic centimeter
Closure The cap or top which seals the container.
Decorating Refers to labels and engraving, not resin color.
dr dram
E Outside diameter of the finish shaft - excluding the thread.
EBM Extrusion Blow molding - Molten plastic is extruded into a hollow tube. This tube is encased in a cooled metal mold. Air is blown into this tube pushing the walls out to the mold. The plastic is cooled and then discharged. The excess plastic at the top and bottom of the bottle are then cut off.
Finish The neck of the bottle which includes the threads for the closure to attach to the bottle.
gal gallon
H Height from the top of the finish to the bottom where it intersects with the shoulder.
HDPE Code 2 High Density Polyethylene. Commonly used for milk, cider and water jugs, as well as detergent, fabric softener and bleach.
Hot Runner The delivery system that carries molten resin from the tip of the extruder to the bottom of the mold cavities.
I The inside diameter of the finish at the smallest possible point.
IBM Injection Blow Molding - This process is a bit simpler than ISBM. The molten resin is injection molded onto a core pin. The pin then rotates to a blow molding station where the bottle is blown and cooled then discharged. This is generally used for small bottles.
ISBM Injection Stretch Blow Molding - link to page on our site with description.
L The distance between the top o the finish to the top of the transfer bead (optional).
LDPE Low Density polyethylene. Used for flexible bags for dry cleaning, trash, produce, bread and shrink wrap. Recycled ldpe is often used to make grocery bags.
LN2 Dosing Adding a drop of liquid nitrogen before sealing the bottle.
MDPE Medium-density polyethylene
ml milliliter
mm millimeter
Other Other plastics often made of multiple resins or layers of different types of plastics. These may include microwavable packages, snack bags and industrial plastics.
Oxygen permeation The rate at which oxygen molecules migrate through the PET wall.
Oxygen scavengers Additives directly introduced to the PET resin during the injection process to absorb oxygen from the product, bottle wall and environment.
oz ounce
Paneling The inward collapse of the sides of the bottle since the pressure inside the bottle is less than the air pressure outside.
PE Polyethylene
PET Polyethylene Terephthalate
PETE PETE (PET) - Polyethylene Terephthalate. Commonly used to package soft drinks, water, beer, juice, sports drinks and other beverages, as well as edible oils, salad dressing, peanut butter, various condiments and sauce, and non food products like household cleaners and personal care products.
PETG Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol
PP Polypropylene. Usually found in drinking straws, battery cases, some dairy tubs, bottle labels and caps.
Preform The first stage in bottle making, all the plastic needed for a bottle is gathered in this form. The neck and finish are also created, this usually looks like a test tube or cone.
PS Polystyrene. Commonly used for materials like packaging peanuts, plastic utensils, meat and egg trays.
PVC Vinyl/polyvinyl chloride. Often used for salad dressing bottles vegetable oil bottles and mouthwash.
Reshipper An individual carton holding 4,6,12,18 bottles. The bottles will be taken out of the box, filled and then put back into the same box for shipping.
S The distance between the top of the finish to the top of the thread.
SPC Statistical Process Control - a statistical means to measure a process to ensure the process is followed and under control. This would be used to measure production performance to predict significant deviations that may result in reject products.
SQC Statistical Quality Control - statistical method of measuring quality to ensure a process is observed and under control.
Stretch Rod The stretch rod extends the preform end cap and stretches the preform to the length the container is meant to be.
T Outside diameter of the continuous thread.
Thermal Deflection Heat softens the plastic material causing it to deform or flex inwards.
Thermoforming Modeling A hand made, clear plastic rendition of what the end product will look like.
Vacuuming The development of a vacuum inside the bottle after it has been filled and sealed.
Vapor Loss Reduction in gases inside the bottle, usually caused by chemical changes.
W The thickness of the transfer bead (optional).
